In memoriam Professor Viorel-Puiu Paun

As a distinguished personality of the international community, Professor Viorel-Puiu Paun was involved in the process of valorizing the results of scientific research in prestigious journals from Romania and abroad. In this regard, the Editorial Board of Control Engineering and Applied Informatics appreciates and recognizes the special contribution for the promotion of the journal and to support the activity of evaluation and selection of the published papers. Through the special activity carried out to support Romanian publications, the Editorial Board of the Control Engineering and Applied Informatics gives a high appreciation and recognition of the important role of the distinguished professor who regrettably left us prematurely.

Professor Paun Viorel-Puiu has dedicated his whole life to scientific research, education and knowledge. He graduated from the Faculty of Physics, University of Bucharest in 1979 and the Faculty of Mathematics, University of Bucharest in 1990. In 1992 he obtained his PhD in Physics from the Institute of Atomic Physics in Bucharest, and in 1997 he obtained the diploma of certified researcher in Biomedical Engineering at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2010 he became a PhD supervisor. He was full professor at the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Automation and Computers, Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology and member of the Romanian Academy of Scientists.

Professor Paun distinguished himself worldwide through a rich scientific, theoretical and experimental research activity in the fields: Nuclear Physics, Condensed State Physics, Physical Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Diffusion Theory, Stochastic Differential Equations, Nanotechnologies, Surface Characteristics and Analysis, Non-Linear Dynamics, Fluid Theory, Transport Modeling and Simulation, reflected through representative publications under the auspices of prestigious publishing houses or conferences. He was the author and co-author of over 150 papers (of which 109 published in ISI journals), which brought him a large number of citations (Hirsh index 19) and over 20 books published in recognized publishing houses, among which "The Fractal and its Implications in the Material Science", published by Athens University Press, stands out.

He was a member of the editorial staff of the journals: Control Engineering and Applied Informatics, Materiale Plastice, Romanian Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, Frontiers in Bioscience-Landmark, Fractal and Fractional.
