On Urban Traffic Modelling and Control

Abstract

The paper presents a dual approach for modeling urban traffic. The modeling goal is to
eliminate congestion by controlling traffic lights cycle structure and duration. The control problem has to
be solved using both analytical methods, and simulation, with continuous models implemented in
Matlab/Simulink. Analytical methods are based on the Hybrid Petri Net approach. In the paper are
presented both kinds of models and they are evaluated using the same input data. It results that the two
modeling approaches are complementary and, by their similar behavior, they reciprocally validate.
